PENANG NEEDS A BICYCLE MAYOR

Cycling the streets and roads of Penang today is at best difficult. And rare. There are very few provisions for safe and comfortable cycling, the weather can be terribly hot.  The traffic a challenge, and the old cycling culture has almost entirely disappeared.
So the Bicycle Mayor would be starting with a weak base. But what a wonderful place it could be for the people of Penang to get around safely in daily life. So we start with a dream, then we get courage, and then we get the people, to together turn the idea into reality. A gift to themselves and a gift to the planet.

NOTE: We are talking about safe day by day transport cycling for women, children and men. (See https://www.facebook.com/groups/ActiveTransport/)  Not about bike racing, promenades, tourism, though we with them all the best.

NEXT STEPS: Now what?  Maybe a creative first step will be to launch an open invitation to see if you can create a sizable consensus of people and groups who are interested to give this idea a closer look.

SPONSORS: Who is going to sponsor this program?  Get behind it? Help make it happen? (Note: Certainly not government, neither local nor national, but a broad grassroots support from civil society in Penang — plus good working relationships with the other on-going Bicycle Mayor programs in cities around the world. In both cases the company will be great.

About The Bicycle Mayor & Leader Program

https://bycs.org/our-work/bicycle-mayors/

The Bicycle Mayor & Leader Program is a global initiative to accelerate the progress of cycling in cities and help get another one billion people onto bikes. Pretty simple, right?

Bicycle Mayors are a catalyst to bring together the public and private realms to uncover the massive economic, health, and environmental benefits of increased cycling capacity. They are uncovering new ideas, working with others to deliver action and promoting innovations that support better cycling for all.

BYCS – which initiated and coordinates the program – is now working with local partners to set up Bicycle Mayors in cities around the world. Together, they are using the bicycle to address pollution crises, tackle road deaths, break down social barriers and enable people to access essential services for the first time. Time for your city to get a Bicycle Mayor? – https://bycs.org/our-work/bicycle-mayors/
